Sherburne History Center is pleased to announce the opening of a new art exhibit featuring the work of two area artists, John Heckman and Lorraine Lukes-Heckman of Sauk Rapids. The exhibit features a variety of landscapes in oils, watercolors, pastels, and mixed media. It will be up through June 30 at the History Center in Becker.
John Heckman was born in Minneapolis and studied at the School of Associated Arts in St. Paul and the College of Art and Design in Minneapolis. He went on to do freelance illustration work for several years and later pursued an interest in fine arts from his studio on Mille Lacs Lake. Heckman is interested in diverse cultures and has studied the Amish and Native Americans, among others. The current show features several of his Amish studies. Heckman has received honors and awards for his work. He recently completed murals at St. Cloud Hospital's Recovery Plus facility.
Lorraine Lukes-Heckman grew up in Wisconsin on a farm near Door County, where she enjoyed the scenery and the great artists of the area and dreamed of becoming an artist herself. She later moved to Minnesota to begin her schooling in art at the Atelier School. She also became a member of the Pastels Society. She enjoys studying reflective light and landscapes and is an emerging artist on the Midwestern scene.
The Heckmans currently live in Sauk Rapids. Many of the works on display are for sale. For more information about the exhibit, please call the History Center at 763-261-4433 or 763-262-4433 (metro line).
